Steps
- Ask an adult to help dissolve as much salt or sugar as possible into hot water.
- Tie the string to the pencil and rest it across the jar so the string dangles in.
- Leave the jar somewhere undisturbed.
- Check every day — crystals will start forming on the string within a few days.
The water needs to be hot to dissolve enough salt/sugar — an adult should handle that part.
You'll need
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Dish soap
- Red food colouring
- A small bottle or cup
- A tray to catch the mess
Steps
- Stand the bottle on the tray and add 2 spoons of baking soda inside.
- Add a squirt of dish soap and a few drops of red food colouring.
- Pour in vinegar and step back.
- Watch the fizzy 'lava' erupt — that's an acid-base reaction making CO2 gas.
Do this on a tray — it fizzes over fast. Avoid getting vinegar in eyes.
You'll need
- Honey
- Dish soap
- Water (food-coloured)
- Vegetable oil
- Rubbing alcohol (food-coloured)
- A tall clear glass
Steps
- Pour honey into the glass first — it's the heaviest.
- Slowly pour dish soap down the side of the glass so it doesn't mix.
- Add the coloured water the same way, pouring gently down the side.
- Add vegetable oil next.
- Finish with the coloured rubbing alcohol on top.
- Watch the layers stack by density instead of mixing!
Ask an adult before using rubbing alcohol — keep it away from eyes and don't drink any layer.
You'll need
- A sewing needle
- A magnet
- A small piece of cork or foam
- A bowl of water
Steps
- Rub the needle along the magnet in one direction, 30-40 times.
- Carefully push the needle through the cork so it lies flat.
- Float the cork in the bowl of water.
- Watch the needle turn to point north-south — you've magnetised it!
Needles are sharp — ask an adult to help with this step.
You'll need
- A zip-lock bag
- Blue food colouring
- Water
- Tape
- A sunny window
Steps
- Fill the bag about a quarter full with water and a drop of blue food colouring.
- Seal the bag and tape it flat against a sunny window.
- Watch over the next few days as 'clouds' form and 'rain' trickles down the inside.

You'll need
- A balloon
- A straw
- Tape
- A long piece of string
Steps
- Thread the string through the straw and stretch it tight across the room.
- Tape the balloon (uninflated) to the straw.
- Blow up the balloon, pinch the end, then let go.
- Watch it rocket along the string — that's Newton's third law in action.
Keep the string at a safe height so nobody trips.
You'll need
- A balloon
- A thin, steady stream of tap water
- Your hair or a wool sweater
Steps
- Turn on the tap to a thin, steady trickle.
- Blow up the balloon and rub it on your hair or a wool sweater for 20 seconds.
- Slowly bring the balloon close to the water stream without touching it.
- Watch the water bend toward the balloon — that's static electricity pulling on it.
No hazards — just keep the balloon away from the tap itself.
You'll need
- A raw egg
- A jar
- Vinegar
Steps
- Place the egg gently in the jar and cover it completely with vinegar.
- Leave it for 24 hours — bubbles will form on the shell.
- Ask an adult to help rinse it off carefully.
- The shell has dissolved, leaving a bouncy, rubbery egg you can gently squeeze.
Handle the egg gently over a sink — it can still burst. Wash hands after touching raw egg.
